福島から未来に向けて

By DCM Kurt Tong カート・トン June 12 - A few days ago I visited the Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant together with colleagues from the Department of Energy. I have visited nuclear power plants before in China and in the Philippines, both in operation and under construction, but visiting Fukushima No. 1 was a unique experience. 先日、来日したエネルギー省の関係者と福島第一原子力発電所に行ってきました。以前、中国とフィリピンで稼動中あるいは建設中の原発を視察したことはありますが、今回の福島第一原発訪問では他では得られない体験をしました。 First, the extent of the damage is striking. On the ocean side, one can still see how the tsunami lashed the facility. Second, the large number of people working on the site surprised me. Hundreds of people commute there every day to work on the clean up and prepare for decommissioning. Many more work in the control room monitoring the site minute-by-minute. I was inspired by the commitment of these individuals to their mission. まず、東日本大震災発生の被害は甚大でした。海側では施設を襲った津波のつめ跡が今もなお見て取れます。次に、現場では作業員が数多く働いていたことが意外でした。毎日大勢の作業員が現場に通い、除染や廃炉の準備作業を行っています。コントロールルームにはさらに多くの作業員が詰めており、分刻みで構内の監視にあたっています。感銘を受けたのは現場で働く一人一人の使命感です。 Experts are saying that it will take many years, even decades, to adequately handle the situation surrounding Fukushima No. 1. The United States is committed to doing what it can to help. This month, 30 U.S. companies that have experience with radiological environmental cleanup will visit Japan to offer their expertise and forge partnerships. 専門家の話では、原発事故の適切な収束にはこれからまだ何年も、場合によっては何十年もの時間がかかるそうです。こうした状況を踏まえ、米国は可能な限りの支援を約束しています。今月、放射能の除染経験がある米国企業30社が来日し、専門知識を提供して協力関係を結ぶことになっています。 It also seems to me that the cleanup of the Fukushima site and the surrounding area may require the development of new technologies that do not even exist yet, including in areas such as chemistry and robotics.
